Our Goal
Scaling the impact of local nonprofits
We are partnering with a local Ugandan nonprofit organization to help provide development opportunities for women and children through several initiatives including:
- Building a hospital to provide free healthcare to women and children
- Setting up a school to teach vocational skills and a child sponsorship program
- Providing women with small demonstration farms with chickens and goats
Meet the:
Mothers of Good Hope Uganda
An organization of women acting on behalf of all the vulnerable mothers and children in Eastern Uganda.
Children are subject to some of the cruelest conditions of poverty. I spent several days walking the streets of Mbale, in complete disbelief of what I saw. Children living on the streets, their only clothes were a torn shirt barely hanging on their skinny bodies. Bugs crawling on their skin, open wounds covering their bodies, bare feet running around the streets begging for food. I saw children drinking out of a public hand sanitizing station, scraping the last bit of a mango they found on the ground and eating cardboard to satisfy their hungry bellies, and walking around aimlessly with no guidance or support.
It was very difficult for me to watch every single day. Putting a clean shirt on one child’s back and giving a meal to another hardly seemed like a solution to this overwhelming problem. This helped me to understand why Monica and her organization started working on behalf of the mothers in these communities. These children end up on the street because of unstable conditions in the home. MOGH stepped forward to be the voice of the mothers with the idea that this would in turn benefit their children.
Women in Uganda suffer immensely from poverty. Many are abandoned by their husbands who feel that the responsibilities of supporting a family are too big a burden to bear and run away with concubines. Women are often left to support the family and raise children on their own. It is common for women to be refused the support of her family because Ugandan customs prevent a woman from returning to her family even if her husband abandons her. They are prevented from formal job opportunities due to gaps in education and constraints of having to run a household. Living on $2 a day, making ends meet for her family and working to support the education and health needs of her children is a hardship most of these women share. Because of these overbearing burdens, children can become neglected and are forced to resort to their own devices which can mean taking to the streets to beg for money and food to survive.
What they do
To combat the overwhelming needs faced by the women and children in their communities, Mothers of Good Hope has worked to initiate several projects that are designed to create development opportunities and promote self reliance that will allow them to live dignified and healthier lives.
Agriculture Project
Farming is one of the best ways women in the area can make a living. Raising chickens, goats, and turkeys can provide a good source of income and food that families can rely on. Through the agriculture initiative, the mothers can learn how to rear animals and are given a small demonstration farm of their own to provide them a small income stream.
Free Healthcare
MOGH started Shawin Hospital to provide free healthcare to the thousands of women and children with no access to medical services or the funds to pay for them. Too often have faulty medical equipment or unpracticed hands led to consequences for the vulnerable. The hospital is partially constructed but functioning nonetheless to help the people.
Vocational Training
Sewing and tailoring clothing is another valuable asset and a lucrative business that can help women earn a living. With the right materials and training, the women in this organization can create businesses for themselves and take charge of their futures. MOGH hopes to build a vocational center to provide this training.
